Protect your Intellectual Property on World Intellectual Property Day

Today, 26 April 2012 is World Intellectual Property Day

Ideas and innovation are a company's Intellectual Property (IP) and for many businesses, especially small and medium size companies, these are their lifeblood.

Companies need to understand the importance of protecting their IP and this can be done through patents, trade marks, design rights, copyright and contracts but they also need to understand the importance of respecting the intellectual property of others.

Intellectual property theft can occur in businesses through the copying of DVDs, CDs, written material or unlicensed use of software and this may be done by a company as a whole or by the company's employees.

Infringement of IP is occuring increasingly in the workplace and companies need to be active in protecting their own intellectual property and be aware of the possible infingements of other businesses' IP. Our latest factsheet, compiled with the help of Alliance Against IP Theft explains Intellectual Property, the risks to your business, and offers some considerations for your protection and the understanding of other businesses' IP rights.

You might be struggling to keep up with the things your child is doing online, you might wonder whether what they are doing is safe, and you might also be thinking how can I be as good a parent online as I am offline? This site aims to make online parenting simple.

Safer Internet Day 2012 - "Discover the digital world together... safely!"

Safer Internet Day (SID) is being held today, Tuesday 7th February 2012. Its aim is to keep people using online technologies safe and 'to discover the digital world together safely.' The focus is now also on mobile technologies owing to the rising numbers of us accessing the Internet via handheld devices such as smartphones.

Young people have traditionally been the main target of SID but its message is for us all irrespective of age. With the explosion of social networks in recent years, parents are keener than ever to protect their children online and the theme of this year's day reflects this: 'connecting generations and educating each other'. We all have a part to play in both sharing knowledge and seeking advice should there be areas of concern.

Take a look at the Safer Internet Day video below:

There is lots of coverage today online and in the press about staying safe online, here’s a round up:

Hunting the Internet Bullies
Online bullying is rapidly growing in size and intensity. A new breed of self-styled "trolls" are stalking social networking websites, aiming their vicious attacks at victims who range from TV celebrities to grieving teenagers. Declan Lawn meets X Factor star Cher Lloyd, who describes how cyber attacks are ruining her life, and highlights a new survey revealing that one in thirteen young people face persistent online bullying. Panorama tracks down some of the bullies and asks: what more could be done to stop them?

Has the internet ruined your life?

Tell the Police how they should tackle e-Crime

The e-Crime Wales partnership is working with Police forces across Wales and the UK to tackle e-Crime and protect businesses and citizens in Wales. This work includes working to improve the knowledge and understanding of e-Crime within the Police.

The National Policing Improvement Agency has been tasked on behalf of the Association of Chief Police Officers to investigate the current challenges facing individuals within Police forces with cybercrime and technology enabled crime and thus, the potential learning that may be required.

To determine these requirements they are conducting a needs analysis with force representatives; also with officers and staff who may experience (or have experienced) criminal activity and report incidents to the Police. In addition they are seeking to establish what crime prevention advice and guidance has been received from Police and what would be the areas to develop in order to help support the needs of businesses.

In order to protect identities the questionnaires are structured so that all responses are anonymous with no identifying marks used.

To access the questionnaire please click on the link below. If the link does not work automatically on your computer, please cut and paste into the address block in your internet browser. The questionnaire should take no longer than 20 minutes to complete.

http://surveys.npia.police.uk/TakeSurvey.aspx?SurveyID=941Inp4

Once the questionnaire has been completed click the 'DONE' button and it will be collated in a central location ready for analysing.

Thank you for taking the time to help us and the Police to improve our response to e-Crime.

Many thanks,

The e-Crime Wales team

Our reliable MC Jamie Owen

Firstly, without financial support from our Sponsors these annual events wouldn't be realised to the standard we think this increasingly important topic deserves. We'd like to extend a big thank you (again) to Logicalis, Cassidian and Spectrum Internet. All three are actively working to transform safe and efficient online services in Wales across multiple sectors.

The exhibition space has steadily grown in size and scope over the last several years and continues to offer delegates and exhibitors alike a valuable networking and, we hope, business opportunity focussed on e-Security. This is unique in Wales and the South West. We thank all this year's exhibiting companies for their support and enthusiasm and in making this a worthwhile part of the e-Crime Wales Summit experience.

Securing expert Speakers on e-Crime, Trust and Security is challenging. Attempting it on an annual basis with different Global organisations is truly challenging! But we're delighted, and just a little proud, that the e-Crime Wales brand continues to open doors for us and facilitate access to great people. We thank them all.
